Sparked by a lonely train ride on the eve of my 23rd birthday, I began to consider the trips of growing, and how its only during these landmarks we recollect such childhood memories of birthday cakes and the colorful toys/figurines on top of them. I think I often imagine myself to be part of this toy collection, merry-making, and to connect with the child within me.

I spend the most productive times of my day whiling away in lost hourglass sands. Trains, are like passing bullets, and I’m the passenger in these quick winds of the night. Somehow, someway or another I feel a tinge of sadness tonight, breathed alive from a far corner of my heart. Its my 23rd birthday tomorrow. Therefore and that’s why I’m afraid to be left alone on this day. And precisely because of that I secretly wish to be left alone instead. Its an interesting paradox if you’d ask me. I sit here dreaming of stories to tell and pictures to paint to myself, the ever lonely crux of the scenario. Yes, i’d be 23 in less than 24 hours time. It is not a fear of of abandonment, I swear. I listen to live mandopop music through my trusty music phone. I glanced at the bleak balding man sitting opposite me me on the empty row of seats, reading the evening papers, and I felt a slight pang of jealousy that he seems to have not a care in the world.

Hungry Ghost Festival 2011

Branding Campaign

Art Direction/Design/Photography: Roy Wang

—

The Key focus of this branding campaign is to remind people of the primary ideas behind this traditional chinese festival, one that has huge significance to our culture yet increasingly alienated by the younger generations of Singaporeans. Having being associated with superstitious connotations and aging beliefs, this festival’s practices and celebrations are increasingly being marginalized. This year, we remind ourselves of the primary idea behind this festival, that of Filial Piety, based on the teachings of Confucius more than 2000 years ago in Ancient China, and how acts of offerings and giving to the deceased is a traditional mark of remembrance, love, and respect for the elders.

Campaign collaterals consists of poster, direct mailer, catalogue, TVC and souvenirs in the form of Limited Edition Hell Bank notes, promoting this event held, for the first time ever, at Fort Canning Park.

—

As city dwellers in Singapore, we often notice the visual aspects of things because they often provide the most direct indication of what we need to know and understand in this fast paced society. However in truth, the sound aspect of our environment is omnipresent, and more often than not, it too makes up a huge portion of our daily experience living in this city. only for us to have missed realising its presence.

Concept

Using the spark of moving from invisible to the visible, we seek to engage viewers to undertake the process of rediscovering these seemingly ‘invisible’ sounds, by isolating these audio aspects of our society, taking them out of their visual context, for the viewers to breathe in these sounds and appreciating the ephemeral beauty of it, as well as to hear them from a different perspective.

The typography is intentionally made ‘invisible’ and linked to a single source transmitting the sounds, which reflects the issue of invisible sounds and their fundamental place in Singapore’s social fabric.

Bangkok • Chiangmai

Old Chiangmai city was the next stop after the long, but comfortable train ride. It came as a breath of fresh air as compared to Bangkok, I can’t put a finger on it but it has probably got to do with the state of modernization of the city, as compared to the former. Stayed at this lovely lovely place called Parami Guesthouse, its tropical interior already captured my heart. Met wonderful people there, Roger & his family, helped us a great deal by suggesting a lot of cheaper alternatives to doing stuff.

The Four walls of the Old Chiangmai City provided easy navigation around, i’d like to imagine the ancient city which stood and fell within them hundreds of years ago. The Night Bazaar at the north gate was by far the biggest i’ve been to, impressed not just by scale but by the variety of life and goods there too. From the bunch of teenagers sitting in a line and belting out pop tunes in the way they know how to(much like the Eagle, Hen & Chicks game formation if you were to imagine), to the solo girl stringing melodies from her violin without the hint of interest or passion in her eyes, I could feel the entire street dotted with sparkles like a bunch of lit fireflies parading the legions of fields.

Doi Sutep, the largest monastery/temple located in Chiangmai is built on top of the hill, a 45 minutes drive up in their iconic red pickup trucks of Chiangmai called Song Taew, their version of the bus/taxi. Boy it was impressive. I could feel the air pressure and temperature dropping as the truck went in circular upwards descend up the winding roads leading to the temple. The amount of gold glittering the entire structure, the sheen and vastly of the architecture imposed on one to stare in silence. It was tranquil to say the least, the view overlooking the entire city of Chiangmai. Saw many portrayals of the Sukhothai style Buddha, recollection of the lessons of Southeast Asian Art surfaced.

Our plans to travel to Laos & Cambodia were smashed to smithereens when we realized the degree of time and money involved. So it was back to Bangkok after a great 4 days, which included a fucking awesome white water rafting experience, by a dirt cheap and shady bus trip filled with world travelers of every mould, & transiting onboard a flight to Saigon, when we met the most interesting people yet.

Bangkok, the 1st stop of my travels, as well as the realization that many of our plans were not to be fulfilled. Nevertheless, like Bangkok trips are supposed to be, it was filled with shopping and non stop walking. The hostel wasn’t helpful, purely on its destination, being caught in the middle of nowhere cabs would want to go during peak hour, spending one hour in them were a prelude to the long traveling times that awaited me for the rest of my journey to other cities. Much has changed of course, since my last visit almost 3 years back, infrastructure, people, but the occasional glimpse of a bit of familiarity does draw back bucketful of memories. I boarded the Bangkok bus service for the 1st time, and realized how much of a cheaper alternative it was, as well as my 1st sleeper train experience as I travelled from Bangkok to Chiangmai, all 13 hours of it. It was of course, coupled with an embarrassing moment of taking the wrong seat of a forgiving old man, as well as wowing at fireworks being shot up the night sky in celebration of the Thai Queen’s birthday.
