Through globalization, external influences increasingly affect our ways of seeing, therefore raising the relevancy of the search and understanding of one’s self identity. Figuratively, as the external world becomes smaller and in this state of flux, is there a need to expand the inner world by maintaining a stronger individualism in both society and self to achieve balance?

Influenced by my Chinese heritage, this work questions and explores the place and possibilities of infusing Daoist aesthetic values of naturalism and law, contributing towards a Chinese ideal of
Universal Balance(tian xia), in tandem yet building upon modern aesthetic viewpoints.

CC: All Creatives

Carbon Copy: To record & to share

It’s a project first and foremost addressing the severe and real situation of Information Gluttony faced by the literate world today. Tons of information are being generated every single moment, read from books, downloaded from the internet, shared with friends, or even the obscene amounts of visual information congested around us.

While this situation is impossible to eradicate, we must then learn how to live and grow with it. And more importantly, us Creatives whom are most highly culpable to the negative effects of these impacts should draw consciousness to these problems and learn how to deal, and even so creatively employ it to our advantage.

When we spend the last 5 minutes researching on a poster layout or examining a logo, where did the past 5 minutes go? When time is used up, does it go to some kind of place like a junkyard? Does time evaporate and turn into rain and start all over again? No it doesn’t of course. It gets absorbed into our mind and takes up space in storage, so to speak. However, what if every stage of the creative process and information received or generated can be recorded down easily and shared with other creatives?

We hope this program would form a huge database of ideas and inspiration, providing creatives with a easy documentation of their thought processes and information received throughout their entire project, providing a easy reference for themselves in the future, as well as more channeled search and receiving data and information for other creatives, based on project types or nature. It would not only save time, but would allow a clearer processing of information, both taken and given.

After all, the same source of inspiration is, in fact a different inspiration to every single Creative.

The Coalition logo is designed to be expressive, timeless and befitting of contemporary and modern aesthetics. Typeset based on Gotham font from the Hoefler & Frere-Jones foundry, it forms a bold icon that is not only highly legible, but speaks of pride and style, allowing it to remain impactful regardless of its format of application.

The bar of alphabet A is abstracted, forming an ascending arrow that draws the viewers visual attention from the logo and out of the visual frame. This resonates with the standards of excellence we aim to deliver to our clients; creating iconic brand marks and works that exceeds their ours and their expectations.

Semicolon specialises in unconventional design, branding and communication solutions through moving images, with an uncanny ability to make seemingly dissonant ideas work in perfect unison. Comprising of a permanent team of four directors, joined by an ever expanding network of talented multi-disciplinary creatives, they aim to provide a collective resource to meet clients’ needs.

Much like their company name suggests, in which Semicolon is used to combine sentences with opposing meanings and link interdependent statements, this pool of creatives throw in ideas that may sometimes oppose, but yet are able to link them together to create fresh and often unexpected works, showcasing each of members’ specialties at the same time.

The logo design was crafted using the most identifiable definition of the Semicolon, the symbol itself, to bring about direct recognition with the company. Taking that into consideration, adjustments were made to the symbol to portray a more modern and contemporary visual language, which translates in the company’s position as a creative studio, as well as a timeless and recognizable imagery in regards to brand recognition.
The rainbow colors employed in the branding signifies the school’s encompassing of all types of students with different capabilities, amplifying their strengths, giving the students a chance to shine, much like how the colors in the rainbow spectrum combine to give white light, the brightest of them all.

The rise of Singapore from a colonial port city to one of the world’s most vibrant and successful nations has been the business of its extraordinary leaders. During the four and half decades since its independence, Singapore has grown form being a developing country to one of the most developed nations in Asia, despite its small population, limited land space, and lack of natural resources. Lee Kuan Yew has stated that Singapore’s only natural resources are its people and their strong work ethic.

Our work here involves the branding and interior design of the Art gallery and its exhibition, Living Legacy, featuring more than 200 oil paintings, other visual media and audio commentary. The space is divided into three sections: 1.)The Colonial Period, focusing on the landing of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 and the beginning of British colonial rule; 2.)Images of Everyday Life, depicting struggles for survival under colonial rule, the deprivations of war, confrontation with communism, federation with Malaysia; 3.)Modernisation & Industrialisation, documenting the remarkable achievements of Singapore’s founding fathers: Lee Kuan Yew, Dr. Goh Keng Swee, Toh Chin Chye, S.Rajaratnam, Lim Kim San and Eddie Barker to name a few.

This is a video addressing the severe and real situation of Information Gluttony faced by the literate world today. Tons of information are being generated every single moment, read from books, downloaded from the internet, shared with friends, or even the obscene amounts of visual information congested around us. Even more to that, the birth of social media has allowed this transferring and sharing of information to escalate beyond every single means. It’s only a matter of time the bulk of the society is going to collapse under the weight of this influx when this equilibrium of information to receiver overloads, like a truck of cold air being sucked into a cracked open mass vacuum.

Stress issues, insecurities, psychological problems, who knows what might happen to our dear future?

While this situation is impossible to eradicate, we must then learn how to live and grow with it. And more importantly, us Creatives whom are most highly culpable to the negative effects of these impacts should draw consciousness to these problems and learn how to deal, and even so creatively employ it to our advantage.

Sparked by a lonely train ride on the eve of my 23rd birthday, I began to consider the trips of growing, and how its only during these landmarks we recollect such childhood memories of birthday cakes and the colorful toys/figurines on top of them. I think I often imagine myself to be part of this toy collection, merry-making, and to connect with the child within me.

I spend the most productive times of my day whiling away in lost hourglass sands. Trains, are like passing bullets, and I’m the passenger in these quick winds of the night. Somehow, someway or another I feel a tinge of sadness tonight, breathed alive from a far corner of my heart. Its my 23rd birthday tomorrow. Therefore and that’s why I’m afraid to be left alone on this day. And precisely because of that I secretly wish to be left alone instead. Its an interesting paradox if you’d ask me. I sit here dreaming of stories to tell and pictures to paint to myself, the ever lonely crux of the scenario. Yes, i’d be 23 in less than 24 hours time. It is not a fear of of abandonment, I swear. I listen to live mandopop music through my trusty music phone. I glanced at the bleak balding man sitting opposite me me on the empty row of seats, reading the evening papers, and I felt a slight pang of jealousy that he seems to have not a care in the world.

Branding Campaign for Hungry Ghost Festival 2011

The Key focus of this branding campaign is to remind people of the primary ideas behind this traditional chinese festival, one that has huge significance to our culture yet increasingly alienated by the younger generations of Singaporeans. Having being associated with superstitious connotations and aging beliefs, this festival’s practices and celebrations are increasingly being marginalized. This year, we remind ourselves of the primary idea behind this festival, that of Filial Piety, based on the teachings of Confucius more than 2000 years ago in Ancient China, and how acts of offerings and giving to the deceased is a traditional mark of remembrance, love, and respect for the elders.

Campaign collaterals consists of poster, direct mailer, catalogue, TVC and souvenirs in the form of Limited Edition Hell Bank notes, promoting this event held, for the first time ever, at Fort Canning Park.

As city dwellers in Singapore, we often notice the visual aspects of things because they often provide the most direct indication of what we need to know and understand in this fast paced society. However in truth, the sound aspect of our environment is omnipresent, and more often than not, it too makes up a huge portion of our daily experience living in this city. only for us to have missed realising its presence.

We seeked to engage viewers to undertake the process of rediscovering these seemingly ‘invisible’ sounds, by isolating these audio aspects of our society, taking them out of their visual context, for the viewers to breathe in these sounds and appreciating the ephemeral beauty of it, as well as to hear them from a different perspective. The typography is intentionally made ‘invisible’ and linked to a single source transmitting the sounds, which reflects the issue of invisible sounds and their fundamental place in Singapore’s social fabric.

Fantasies of a Concrete Jungle explores on the societal conflict between technology, human, and nature. As a society progresses on and embarks on more technological exploits that comes at the price of nature, one wonders we would get to experience this natural warmth of beauty tomorrow. Especially so for city dwellers like us, surrounded by a concrete jungle everyday, have we on a larger basis forgotten this existence of this beauty ourselves. Using a futuristic, fantastical and imaginative approach, the work questions whether nature in the future, would exist simply as a fantasy or a constructed fragment of our history.
