For the seventh edition of our studio's #WriteaChristmasCard series, we created a one-of-a-kind pinball machine card featuring a beautifully illustrated RoboSanta. There's nothing more satisfying than pinball landing exactly where you want it to be. No matter how old you are, you should never stop having fun. Live a little, and have a Merry Christmas! #ToTheMoon

#WriteaChristmasCard is our studio's yearly self-initiated campaign to encourage people to send a handwritten note or a card to someone they care about for Christmas. Through the joy of receiving, we hope it in turn inspires the recipients to do the same.

+65: Home

2021

We were commissioned to design the +65 publication, an annual journal published by the Founders’ Memorial, National Heritage Board. This journal looks at Singapore’s post-independence history and society, how this history is interpreted, represented and remembered, and the ethos of modern Singapore as shaped by its founding history. It also explores the relationship between national policy and lived experiences through visual culture, artefacts from the National Collection and personal stories. Through these discoveries and reflections, the journal hopes to present a cross-generational perspective and draw connections between post-independence history and its present-day impact and relevance.

The topics covered an extensive range from multiple angles, and our design utilised a vibrant illustration palette coupled with archival images, to create a lively and engaging framework for telling the stories across the various sections. The charming juxtapositions and warm colour palette set the visual theme for this inaugural issue.

sAiL is the Future

Novoflex’s proprietary sAiL is an innovative single inlay solution for smart card applications including payments, telecommunications and IoT that is patented in over 30 countries across the US, Europe and Asia. We were tasked to design a brand new set of communication materials for this technology-driven company that is transforming the industry.

The design of the sales kit plays with the idea of unravelling through the chips's various key selling points via an interactive experience that presents the information in an accessible and interesting way. The opening spread of the kit features an analog rotating wheel which underscores the chip technology's limitless design potential by featuring the custom chip shapes (could be a logo or any brand imagery) that the EMV smart chip could adopt.

A promotional video was also produced in conjunction with the sales kit as a digital means to introduce the revolutionary product to a wider audience base. In our technology-enabled world, smart chips increasingly power solutions across many industries and use cases. We wanted to showcase how Novoflex is passionate about providing high quality and proven solutions to meet evolving client needs.

It is challenging for card issuers to differentiate their offerings through rewards and rates. Increasingly, marketing now drives cardholder affinity and engagement, and ultimately wallet preference. The concept of the fully animated film is targetted at narrating how Novoflex helps partners bring their brand promise to life.

ADM Undergraduates Prospectus 2021/2022

The Fourth industrial revolution is characterised by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres. It also brings renewed focus on how arts and culture are critical in formulating the advancement of society and mankind. Tasked with designing the ADM Undergraduates Prospectus 2021/2022, a yearly publication published by the NTU School of Art, Design and Media introducing their Design Art and Media Art programmes, we wanted to echo the college's position in grooming the next generation with the powerful tools to enact meaningful change in this new world.

This issue features an expressive computer generated module we designed that represents the diversity of ways in which art and design can impact technology and society. A quadrant is 3D printed onto every cover; juxtaposing how each student has the potential to be a part of this movement. The result is sophisticated, emotive, and stunning to the eye.

Antony Gormley Publication

2021

We were commissioned to design a publication to accompany internationally renowned artist Antony Gormley’s new commission at the National Gallery Singapore, Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery. Horizon Field Singapore (2021), invites visitors to walk through a vast matrix of aluminium rings, allowing them to co-create the experience by stepping through the rings. This new-site specific installation is complemented by three sculptures placed around the Gallery which present defining aspects of Gormley’s extensive study of the human body: Close V, Sense and Ferment. They also provide a wider context for Horizon Field Singapore, in which our own bodies become part of the work, and where we can reimagine our own relationship with our environment.

The hardcover features the namesake work, printed on fabric and embellished with a silver foiled title. The overarching design concept for this is driven by the interest in using typography to create forms and relationships with spaces. Structural title forms lend an extension of the sculptural nature of Gormley's works, leading readers to dive into the portfolio of beautifully reproduced coloured imagery of his works.

ADM Travelling Show 2020

Each year, the NTU School of Art, Design and Media in Singapore organises the ADM Show, an exhibition that showcases the works of the graduating artist and designers from the BFA Media Art and Design Art programmes.

In a year where COVID-19 has rendered most physical experiences impossible, the show was inevitable cancelled in the midst of a nationwide lockdown. The challenge for us, was how do we design a solution to organise and showcase the wide-ranging work of 160 multi-disciplinary students whose practices span Digital Animation, Filmmaking, Photography, Visual Communication, Product Design, and Interactive Media? On top of that, how do we present their works to an important group of audience (leading creative industry experts and possible future employers) in an engaging way that has traditionally been showcased via a physical exhibition?

We conceived the notion of a travelling show; a package that contains all of the student works presented in various fashions according to what best-allowed viewers a unique experience regardless of the medium of choice.

In an age whereby print continues its decline, it was imperative for us to design a piece that breathed emotional tactility whilst exemplifying the beauty and power of print; one that would emotionally connect with viewers and buck the trend whereby every event and social engagement has literally gone digital. The travelling show employs the concept of 'Unseen to Seen', as the graduating cohort seek to bring to light multiple perspectives and hidden entities through their creative works. The concept ties into the broad spectrum of how creativity acts as a beacon in such difficult times to offers new insight and renewed ambition.

The notion of bringing creativity to people was also a guiding principle for our design approach. The travelling show cover was designed to have a strong graphic and textural impact in response to a year that felt unrelenting in its intensity. Using the flocking technique, we intentionally obscured the manifesto of the graduating cohort against a backdrop of a bold, neon orange cover, further emphasising on the concept of bringing to light the 'Unseen to Seen'. Upon opening of the package, one would encounter a full black on black interior, marked by an eye-catching vacuumed formed interior, which spells out the show title. Juxtaposing this are six individual packages, which are crafted with a multitude of print techniques that best showcased the nature of the disciplines.

Ground Eyes Entertainment

Established in Shenzhen China, Ground Eyes Entertainment has grown to become one of the leading names in the region, specialising in the production and promotion of large-scale live events and concerts by Asian and International artistes.

The bold new brandmark and identity system we've created pays homage to Ground Eyes Entertainment's brand essence, summed up as 'Good Music, To Be Seen' (好音乐，看得见). A ray of stage light is incorporated into the Chinese character for 'Seen' (观) as part of their brandmark, the striking neon yellow acting as a key signifier set against neutral warm grey tones, representing the elements of exuberance and excitement that’s ingrained in the brand’s DNA.

For The House; Against The House Publication

For the House; Against the House is an art experience organised by OH! Open House as part of the Singapore Art Week 2021, which looks at social issues in Singapore through a unique debate format where art establishes the arguments. As with all forms of debate, people are to form their own opinions and take a stance; are they for or against the house? The branding is a nuanced approach of reflecting the concept of a 'divided' house, and how the conversations take place within the brackets forms that constitutes the identity

The cover design of the collector's book introduces this concept of the 'divided' house, through its beautifully blind embossed title typography balanced in a radiating composition against a cool grey paper stock. This visual language carries throughout the publication, providing a strong but neutral framework for the viewers on the outside looking in through the artwork collection and arguments that are put forth.
