City Stories: Mapping the Narratives of Singapore's Landscapes is a community storytelling platform on the multicultural identity and evolution of Telok Ayer and Amoy Streets, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Singapore that has historically been home to multiple ethnic communities. Both streets were the earliest to be developed in the 1820s and are part of what is known today as “Chinatown” – the largest conserved historic district in Singapore. Developed by the School of Art Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University under the lead of Professor Kristy H.A. Kang, the initiative is supported by the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority as a form of digital place-making; reflecting the everyday histories of the communities shaping place and culture in a historic district.
Housed in the URA City Gallery, we designed and developed the platform across touchscreen, web and mobile platforms to allow users to discover the changing streetscapes across the centuries and to virtually navigate amongst the various shophouses through a painstakingly stitched panoramic image to uncover the rich stories and diversity behind each of them. A curated selection of archival photographs and original interviews with experts, residents and stakeholders is also presented amongst the multitude of content available on this platform. The platform also allows one to explore the transformation of this area from shoreline to skyline through comparison between historic maps.
