We were commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore to design a 116 page hardcover publication to accompany the Home, Truly: Growing Up With Singapore, 1950s to the Present exhibition held in collaboration with The Straits Times, as part of the newspaper’s 175th anniversary. Serving as a companion to the show, the publication features generous amounts of photographs and artefacts, including those contributed by members of the public which explores the moments and experiences in Singapore’s past and present that express Singapore's identity and collective memory as a nation.
Through five key themes and using the metaphor of a home, the publication is presented in an intimate way using craft-book styled openers that invites readers to see themselves in the stories presented, reminiscing the act of how families used to do up photo collage books in the past, encouraging them to reflect on what Singapore means to them as their home and what they aspire it to be.
Using edge printing, we extended an iconic imagery of HDB flats (Housing Development Board flats, the most common form of housing in Singapore) shot by photographer Darren Soh, across every spread of the book, re-emphasising the notion of home for this exhibition.
